Hoop Technique Workshops w/ Spiral & Rich
Saturday March 27th 4:00pm - 7:00pm
Sunday March 28th 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm

We're very excited to be hosting the amazing hoop duo Spiral and Rich of Hoop Technique. This 2 day workshop will introduce the complete system of Hoop Technique theory with specific emphasis on the concepts of Space & Effort, day one focusing on Space, day two on Effort.
Hoop Technique Theory encompasses a broad range of hoop movement and vocabulary oriented around four key concepts: Space, Effort, Time and Flow. The focus on these four ideas was inspired by Laban theory, one of the most widely used systems of human movement analysis. These four concepts provide a framework for creative expression and expansion. This will increase awareness of what’s possible and available and, hence, encourage exploration. Each concept can be applied to any move and can be understood as a lens through which it can be examined and experienced.
The concept of Space explores the relationship of body and hoop to the space we occupy while hooping.
Effort refers to the quality of movement; the energy, emotion and tone with which we execute movement.
Time relates to speed, acceleration, direction changes, rhythm, tempo and beat.
Flow is the personal mastery of creative movement, our effortless transition from move to move guided by expertise, muscle memory and inspiration. Flow unlocks the bliss and transcendent joy of hoop dance. In this portion of the workshop we’ll work on seamlessly transitioning between moves
Some of the moves that will be covered:
Isolations, Extensions, Isopops, Isobreaks, Antispin, 3d Moves, Dynamic Stalls, Sustained spinning, several on and off-body reverse methods, and more.

ABOUT SPIRAL
Kissed by stardust from the rings of Saturn, Vivian became Spiral and was thereby inspired to created a unique, mesmerizing style of hoop dance. Part whirling dervish, circus artist, modern dancer, yogi and acrobat, her life was forever transformed by a love for circles and an affinity for revolutionary motion.
A pioneer in the development of hoop dance vocabulary, Spiral continues to inspire and be inspired by the unfolding of this symbolic movement art. 8 years ago, she planted the first hoop seeds in Carrboro, NC under the oak tree on the Weaver St. lawn. Those seeds have grown into a world-renowned and immensely talented hoop community, watered and cultivated by Spiral, Baxter and Jewels.
Since moving on from Carrboro to further pursue her calling as a traveling performer and modern-day gypsy, her engaging performances have wowed audiences from the catwalk in Hong Kong to nightclubs in Vienna, to a boisterous crowd of 20,000 in Michigan. Her performance skills include hoop manipulation, contact juggling, living statue, fire dance, aerial silks and aerial hoop. She performs and teaches hoop dance all over the globe. She was also been nominated for numerous Hooping.org awards including “Female Hooper of the Year” two years running.

ABOUT RICH
Rich Porter is an established innovator in the ever-evolving genre of hoopdance. With a degree in architecture from the acclaimed program at Calpoly, Rich is known for his original approach to plotting the hoop’s path through space, sometimes creating graphic “blueprints” that map the hoop’s trajectory. His dynamic style encompasses crisp, geometrical movements that punctuate and provide contrast to fluid, high-speed motion.
Rich discovered hooping in 2007 through his wife Lauren, who had witnessed the artform in the underground clubs of LA. In the beautiful central coast of California, in San Luis Obispo, the two of them befriended a close group of friends drawn together by the art of spinning. Rich and Lauren, together with Chris Williams, Laurie Hobbs, Grant Leonard, Melissa Wren, and Josh Parker, became Fluid Luminescence, the area’s only fire arts performance group.
After an intense year of honing his skills in the fertile environment of the multidisciplinary group of spinners (staff, poi, and hoop artists), Rich began to develop his own unique style influenced by the emphasis on technical skills and theory of staff and poi, as well as his own background in architecture and graphic design.
At the end of 2008, the couple moved to San Francisco, where Rich’s influences widened to include the national and international spinning communities. It was there that isopop.com was born, named after one of his signature moves. Isopop style quickly became reknowned as a new approach to hooping, winning Rich thousands of followers a month (via isopop.com, FaceBook and Twitter), as well as a nomination for Best Male Hooper of 2008 by the international hooping community’s hub, hooping.org. He has become a sought-after instructor, and has taught at the NorthWest Hoop Gathering, Hoop Convergence, HoopCamp, and World Hooping Day, as well as in private workshops.
Rich continues to draw inspiration from technical moves of the poi and staff communities, as well as from fire fans, double staff, and buugeng. In 2009 Rich began performing, acquiring stage skills and bringing awareness to his body positioning and sightlines. His focus on technical skills and the conscious use of space have changed the course of hooping as an artform.
